Google home and common words in names

Postby MolsonB » Thu Jun 29, 2017 3:28 pm

Troubles with controlling devices with common words in descriptions and rooms.

If I say "turn on downstairs fireplace lights", it turns on
•downstairs fireplace lights
•downstairs lights (3 way switch, so this is a scene)
•downstairs tv lights

I tried with no room assigned and room assigned.

If I say "turn downstairs on", it turns on
•downstairs back door (which it can't, it's a door sensor to tell me if door is open or not)
•downstairs fireplace lights
•downstairs lights (3 way switch, so this is a scene)
•downstairs tv lights

Hi MolsonB,

This is our experience with Google Home and what I'd expect to see especially if these devices are in a "Downstairs" Room. The device names need to be unique and not include common words like "lights". When you say "downstairs lights" Google Home makes assumptions based on your device names as to what you want turned on. That is more of a generic request rather than a device specific request is how Home sees it.
