Amazon changed something and now there's a problem

Up until last night, I was able to control my Insteon ceiling fans using voice control. I used to be able to say "Alexa, set the fan to low", and the fan would turn on low.

Well, they changed something. Now, the only command that works is "Alexa, turn off the fan". I can't turn it on at all using voice control.

Any clues?

Hi miataguy,

No idea...Alexa has never supported fans actually. Just on/off/dim and thermostats. We wish Amazon would add support for fan controls. If/when they do we'll add support.

I think you had mentioned that to me once before. Despite the lack of official support, I *was* able to control my fans until yesterday. I tried putting in a support request with Amazon, but that's a study in futility. All they do is send out a canned email telling me to reinstall everything, etc.

Oh well.

Hi miataguy,

Amazon sends out surveys to us devs and the last one did include questions about fan control. I'm hopeful that official support will arrive.

In the meantime you could try routines. For the action set a program to run where the fan is set to LOW, MED, HIGH, or OFF. So the routine would look something like:
- Routine name: "Fan Low"
- Action: Create a program where when the program is true (ON) it turns the fan to Low.
- Say: "Alexa, fan low" to run the routine.

Tried that - didn't work. Alexa couldn't find the programs.

You may have to tell the Alexa app to change the program into a "light" type in order to use it with Routines.
